  Avenger Battlecruiser: Modelling

I like the look of these craft, more than the skinny little modern ships, but as I looked at it I decided I would just have to convert it.  My first plan was to alter the gun batteries.  The GW pdf is a little unclear, and the text accompanying it is actually incorrect as far as what bits you need to turn the vengeance into an avenger.

Getting past all this, I was left with a fairly open page to play with. I put the basic body together and then looked at it for a while to try and decide how I was going to change the look.  I wanted something that reflected this ancient craft's archaic status and wanted the highlight the blend between Imperial and Chaos fleets.

I felt there was something fish-like in the craft, and I had the idea of adding extra wings to the front of the craft.  This was fairly easy, by shaving off the batteries and using plastic glue to add the wings.  I put weapon batteries on the upper gundeck, and then added higher gun decks, usually for lance batteries, that I thought had been added at some point, or added and never finished.

Playing around with these parts, I added an extra upper gun deck between the fore and aft parts of the craft.  Coloured red here.  A few chunks of green stuff (coloured green!) to help keep all the bits together.

The other major conversion I added came when I decided to take off the metal bridge and replace it with something that gave it a more streamlined silhouette.  I took that off as well, imagining that the bridge had been positioned amidships, combining with the gun observation platforms.  I looked through the chaos and imperial sprus that I had around me and thought about trying to get a spine of spikes along the bridge position.  A bit of chopping and shaving and plastic glue meant that I had a 'spine' that would go along the rear of the ship, giving the whole craft a familiar, but strange look.
