Day 2:
We landed at dusk last night, and it seems
that this place has already been infested with Xenos. I met with
the local PDF commander, General Gortez, an hour after my arrival at
Base Camp Hydator Prime. The PDF command is hereditary, and he is a
amateur fellow, but it seems even the best men would be hard pressed
in this situation.
I am sticking rigidly to orders: to bring
in as many people and foodstuffs as possible, and delay the Xenos
as much as possible. I have detailed two Corps of the Helios
Brigade around the star port. Even with the ten thousand men of the
PDF, we barely have enough men to secure the area from civilian
unrest, never mind Xenos intrusion. I have ordered the evacuation
of all Imperial Navy and orbiting defence platforms to Gothmar.
These orders have been kept secret from the local populance. I
have also ordered the fortifications around the capital
strengthened, and the local PDF units mixed in with mine own men.
We shall show them what it means to stand firm.
Day 4: As I said contact has been
lost across major regions of the planet. The speed of the
infestation is bewildering the local commanders. Only Faith in the
Emperor will save us. We are keeping them to their duty, which is
to stand and die. Death before impurity.
Day 5: Sir – I must insist that I
am given command of the defences of this city. Meddling from the
local aristocracy will only hinder our work here. I have been
unable to take control of the terrestrial planetary defences, which
are guarded by a Skitari Honour Guard.
Day 6: I was awoken last night
by a terrific explosion in the direction of the lance battery
generators. Half of these were blown up rendered inoperable by
Xenos kill squads that overpowered the Adeptus Mechanicus Skitari.
I have assumed control from Magos Dreens, although it was necessary
to pull my pistol on the man. I threatened him with the flame of
the pure if he resisted. I dispatched the men of the Helios Brigade
to the area and there was vicous fighting before we restored the
power supply. Not before hundreds of spores were disgorged over the
Hydator Prime landmass. It is impossible to know how many of the
foul creatues have made landfall, but I fear for the worst. There
is a distinct scent of ozone from the lance batteries. With power
restored we have cleared the sky of Xenos drones for the moment.
Faith in the
Emperor.
Day 7: We
have had a glimpse of the threat that lurks just out of sight. The
hydra emplacements have been going almost constantly for a day now,
shooting down flying creatures that seem to be testing our
strength. I have a feeling that the main body of the Xenos are
moving rapidly through the central continental belt. We are
plotting their course on the maps, and they are moving with a speed
that is bewildering, destroying settlements more than eighty clicks
distant from one another within minutes. The size of the force that
heads our way can only be guessed at, but we pray that the Golden
Throne will guide us in our endeavour.
Invasion of Hydator: Scenario Planner
The fall of
Tyrell was a closely guarded secret within the upper echelons of the
Administratum and the Imperial Guard and Navy. But even as the
planet was overrun, no one had any inkling how serious the Xenos
Infestation was. There happen to be two Cobra class escorts on tour
of duty in the system, and these were scrambled with an escourt of
smaller vessels and half the system’s
fleet of eight defence monitors. As a matter of course, asistance
was also requested from Battlefleet Pavonis, and evacuations of key
personel from Hydator were prepared, in an effort to save as much
manpower and foodstuffs as possible.
However,
Imperial commanders did not appreciate the deadly speed of the Xenos,
and before the last ships had left orbit around Tyrell, the first
reports of Xenos infestation began to be radioed in Hydator Prime.
The local PDF had already been alerted and armed, but as the scale
of the infestation began to be suspected, and the Cobra class
escourts relayed vid picts of a massive Hive Fleet, they were
ordered to fall back with all the orbital defences that could be
evacuated. With her orbital defences stripped bare, Hydator was
effectively naked to arial assault, and the Xenos drones moved into
low orbit and began to disgorge their foul cysts into the
atmosphere.
The men of
Hydator put up a brave fight, but many were overwhelmed within the
first few days of spore attack. It was a race against time to bring
even a fraction of the twenty million agro-workers and foodstuffs
into Hydator Prime. A race which it was thought would be impossible
to win. And the men to perform the impossible, were once again,
scattered units of the Crinan IVth.
Air
Defence Platforms: after the evacuation of antiquated lance and
ordinance platforms to defend Gothmar the only defences capable of
holding back the bloated spore-hives were the antiquated lance
installations around Hydator Prime, dating back to the time of the
Oscarl Civil Strife. The Hive Mind has singled these installations
out as a prime target. Destroy these and death will rain
unhindered. If the lance platforms survive the attack then
spore-hives will not be able to disgorge their noxious cargo over
the crucial area of Hydator Prime and it’s
space docking facilities.
Mass
Evacuations:
even before the spores began to fall it was deemed impossible to
remove all 20 Million inhabitants of Hydator, even though the more
genetic material left behind was known to ultimately increase the
Xenos threat. A short list was quickly drawn up by the Governor of
Hydator, including key family members and staff, members of the
ecclesiasty and Adeptus Mechanicus, and key units of the planet’s
PDF. Foodstuffs were also evacuated, as these had a higher monetary
value than the local populance, many of whom only had a rudimentary
association with technology. IG units were assigned the job of
keeping roads open for these convoys, even though the situation
across Hydator was dire.
Hab
Zones: within a number of days the Xenos Infestation has reached
such proportions that the IG are fighting desperately to hold the
ramshackle capital of Hydator Prime. The initial battles are fought
on the outskirts of town and the resistance of the prey irritates
the Hive Mind. It senses the centre of opposition and sends part of
itself to destroy it. A vicious battle ensues where quarter is
neither expected or given.
Final
Battle: Forlorn Hope (city fight) at the Space Port: The last
vestiges of order are surrendered as Tyranid spores begin to rain
down on the space port, and killer drones move into low orbit to
intercept fleeing craft. While panic ensues within the civilian
evacuees, order within the IG Forlorn Hope stays firm as they are
given the order to hold at all costs. The longer these men can hold
out the more ships will make it off the planet. As the final
Tyranid assault begind, they bless their guns and commit their souls
to the Golden Throne.
