titan: legs
Before assembling anything I sprayed all the pieces figure black,
and then codex grey. At this point of the process a heap of
imagination is called for: as you have to be able to visualise how
you want the figure to look by the time you’ve finished: and you’re
stuck with the toes and bird-thumb and how to model them all.
Forge World, with their usual over attention to
detail supply you with a ton of pistons that all need trimming and
filing. Procedures for safely dealing with resin dust are largely
ignored as I find I’m a little disorganised and I end up holding my
breath for as long as possible and filing away, or just walking
outside.
Note to self, again: go to Woodies and
buy face mask!!
I’m not really sure what I was wanting from my
titan now, final figure-wise, but I think I gave up on anything too dynamic (like
balancing on one foot or with toes just touching down) because I
wanted it safe from falling over on the battlefield and also have an
idea for a diorama for it: which it’ll be semi-stationary.
The legs come in three main sections, with
armour plates that cover the shins and thighs, which I'll leave off
till right at the end. Again some luck, blutack and imagination is
required to visualise how you want the legs and the hips to all fit
together. Once you have put these in place then there are a
load of pistons around the ankle joint that all need trimming to the
right length.
I screwed up royally when trimming and cleaning
up the hip joints and managed to trim off the small nipples that
would be the fixture points of the hip pistons and cursed royally
myself when realising this. A little bit of drilling would fix this
later on.
Finally the ball joints fit into the abdomen
piece: which I angled to give the basic leg structure a bit more
animation, while still allowing me to fit the titan into the diorama
I have planned.
I left all the scrolls and pistons and
all till later – when I
would add the black patterning - and put the lower torso saside. I
was glad to get this piece over with – as it’s fiddly and irritating
trying to glue and fix it all together – and legs are not the most
inspiring of pieces to paint. I was a lot more excited about
starting onto the princeps and the body and the much more
interesting interior details.
