titan: finished article
Once I had the whole thing together I started painting the outside,
which is quite a serious job. To speed up the process I used a
technique I'd used on my Aquarian Guard army tanks, which looked
great and was quick and easy.
The whole thing was pre-sprayed codex grey, and
then I used a sheet of paper with a hole cut into it to spray black
through onto the titan in a mottled manner. I then dry brushed
the entire titan with tank brushes and a very dry vallejo foundation
white, which I've found is the best white for dry-brushing as it
dries so quickly.
I had used a 1'' drill bit to drill into the
hip socket and neck joint and added enough rare earth magnets to
mean that I could still move the guns, head and swivel the body on
the hip joints.
I had originally planned to paint the exposed
metal and pistons boltgun metal, but this started to look too grey
overall, so I switched to tin bitz highlighted up to shining gold. I
painted the muzzle of the face, toyed with the idea of adding teeth
or something, but gave up as I liked the overall menace of the
thing. Having seen a number of giant buddhas in caves in
China, I had an idea that titans would be similarly venerated while
standing dormant in thier hangers. I added lots of little
small details, including purity seals, painting all the scrolls
bleached bone and highlighting upto pure white, and then adding
scripts.
The banner I used a Forge World landraider rear
door, and made a banner with heat and a piece of plastic card.
I have an old, old White Dwarf, which actually has interesting
content in, and which has an article on titan banners. I added
chain to the banner, devised one for my titan and drilled small
holes into the groin of the titan and added rare earth batteries so
that the banner can also be removed.
Then I added a number of other little details,
the skull of an old princep; banners, insignia etc.
